Surroundings Hotel Castellarnau

Our Hotel is situated in the Catalan Pyrenees, in the region of Pallars Sobira, one of the best preserved regions in the whole country. There are wild rivers with crystal clear water where you can enjoy numerous water sports and activities. We also have the highest peaks in Catalonia where you can practice mountaineering, hill walking or running you may also want to enjoy our wild fruits and berries, wild mushrooms and of course fishing.

The village is well preserved and retains many of its original medieval features such as the main street, the main entrance arch, fortified walls, etc... At one end we have a fortified arch flanked by a tower and at the other another archway leading to the mill and the public laundry. The arches are 100m apart. Before passing the second arch if you turn right there is a small path that leads to the Tower of Escalo on the hill above. From here you can see the whole village and across the nearby river to the ruins of the Monastery of St. Pere de Burgal.
A 15 minute walk will lead you to the recently restored ruins of this magnificent Benedictine monastery which hosts copies of extraordinary murals of which the originals have been removed to MNAC museum in Barcelona. The 1st mention of the monastery dates from AD 859 it started its decline in the 16th century and was finally abandoned in 1835.
